My name and the story behind my logo
My name is Sara and I've never liked it. My older brother and sister's names are Kaveh and Kimia, so when I was a kid I always wondered why my name doesn't start with the letter K to match with their names. My parents' answer was that my brother and sister picked my name. When I became a bit older I found out my birthday marks one of the main trials of Ibrahim the prophet which was to sacrifice his son by the command of God. It is a big festival in Islamic countries. So my religious aunt suggested the name "Sara" which was the name of one of Ibrahim's wife and my siblings insisted to name me Sara. That made me very upset because I felt my parents didn't really care about my name, I felt there is no love from them behind my name. I still have the same feeling about my name and see the lack of love in it. But as time went on, I learned all these thoughts and stories are part of me and shaped the person I am. I don't need to love my name, I should respect my parents' choice and embrace my name! When I moved to Australia I faced another issue with my name. The way we pronounce my name in Iran is Sʌrʌ however in Australia people tend to pronounce it Sɛrʌ! So I should always tell people which way they should say my name. Sometimes it becomes annoying because my name is my identity and I want people to say it correctly! When it came to designing my logo...I thought I should bring this into my design. I can also express my Iranian background through that. The way I write my name in Farsi is س (sin) الف (alef) ر (reh) الف (alef). Alef is used for 4 vowel sounds "æ", "ɛ", "o", and "ʌ". When it is in the middle of a word we know that it sounds "ʌ" but when it is the first letter of a word, to make it sound "ʌ" we add an accent (~) on top of it. So if I add it in the middle it means I am emphasizing the sound "ʌ"! Therefore I brought the Farsi sign to not only illustrate my Iranian side but also to strengthen the sound "ʌ".
